Carling Cup!

Home to Hull! Oooooh, the GLAMOUR.

Leeds away at Macc. Couple of local-ish derbies for the Sheffield teams: Blades get Chesterfield at Home, Wednesday away at Rotherham. Could be interesting!

Full list at the BBC here

An update for a change

I should use this one more really.

Quote of the day from the Arseblog Arses: shutupdrogba says "i cant wait for the day where we actually by a cunting cunt that can actually fit in our first team." in response to reports that Arsenal are about to sign Norwegian 16-year-old Haavard Nordtveit.

The Alex have just about completed their sixth signing of the summer (bugger me) in the form of Danny O'Donnell from Liverpool, making his loan from last season permanent. Sounds like a decent move. With Chris McCready returning too, it's all change in the defence, with Billy Jones having rejected his contract and set to move on, and being replaced by a new and improved Billy Jones from Exeter. Maybe they think we won't notice it's a different bloke...? Oh Lordy, Dario says he 'could be the next Shaun Smith'. Argh! Also we have Darren Moss off to Shrewsbury. We've also got Eugen Bopp (midfield) from Shrewsbury, and any player called Bopp must be a good thing. Darren Kempson (defence) has also gone to the Shrews, Greg Stones (defender again!!) arrives from TNS. That's four...
Varney's the big money move out, o'course. £2mil is good money with us playing in this division, well worth taking. Bit worried that we don't seem to have signed anyone up front yet...Higdon having gone as well, albeit he didn't play much. And Rodders. And Lee Matthews (not sure who he is, mind...!)
Steven Schumacher from Bradford - midfield again. 14 goals in 140 appearances. Hmmmm...

Talking about the state of academies in the football league, and how they are under threat due to the money-grabbing of the Premiership. A grant of £138k to fund a £1m academy, and we budget to run at an £800k loss, assuming we don't sell anyone - more or less, the academy has to pay for itself or we go bust. The continuing influx of cheap foreign players has kind of scuppered the plan a bit...

We could really do with some consistency in the defending though - to concede seven goals in two games right after Dario thought we were getting 'hard to beat' is a bit mental.

Nothing Alex-wise to see in the transfer market yet.

Well there's been no update for ages as nothing good has happened. Might as well do an update since we have something sufficiently shite of note, vis a vis we're into the relegation zone after losing 5-1 at Ipswich.

That looks like it for us; Ipswich might do us a favour and stuff Brighton next weekend, and you never know, Forest might do Gillingham (unlikely as Forest are now down), either of which would be enough; but nevertheless both require us to beat Coventry who a) are now safe, good, won't care, but b) are safe due to stuffing 5th place Derby 6-2 (a result currently missing from the bbs championship results page, moo).

So we're probably down. Do we care? Yes. Is it a bad thing? Well, possibly; but staying up could well result in the most embarrasing season EVER #27, as the players haven't really shown any sort of consistent footballing ability since ashton left. Which is odd - they can clearly play and I refuse to believe that Deano was making that much difference to the team; we really looked like an outside chance for the playoffs. And in patches we can compete against decent teams in this division - Millwall (admittedly once they thought they were safe at 3-0) looked decidedly ropey, until Wise brought himself on and had a Klinsmann in the area; Stoke we held for a long time and had the chances to go ahead. So maybe the ability is there but the heads have gone.

And you've really got to look at the management there. Time Dario please. There's no doubting his ability as a footballing coach but he's determined to hold true to certain principles above all else. Not playing brought in players above homegrown regardless of who's clearly the better player, refusing to deal with agents (really fucking stupid in today's game), et cetera et cetera. He's on record saying he could have kept us up if he'd gone out and brought players in when the chance was there but there was no actual need to stay up, and we would go where the players take us. Well, they've taken us down, those players that you've coached, that are the jewel in the crown of all you've achieved. They're not good enough for the Championship and in 20 years we've gone up _one_ division. Yes, yes, there's a lot more to it than that; but really, what we've done is stay with the game in a period when it's become hugely more successful and lucrative. If we fail next season, as looks reasonably likely given the way we've performed this year, we could end up in his final year of management right back where we fucking started. That is not an achievment worthy of note, imho.

Right, rant over.

From the Telegraph:
' Nottingham Forest defended stoutly for an hour at
the City Ground but were eventually cut to set-pieces, leaving Spurs to
contemplate a tricky FA Cup quarter-final at St James's Park'

Cut to set-pieces.
gosh

Another defensive signing!

Dario Gradi has moved to strengthen his defensive options by swooping to sign Shrewsbury Town defender Darren Moss.

The 23-year-old joins the Alex on a contract which will see him stay
at the club until the end of the 2007 season and could be set for his
Alex debut against Wolves at the weekend.

Moss began his career at Chester City making 75 appearances for our
Cheshire rivals after making his debut for the club back in 1998
against Brentford.

A move to Shrewsbury followed in 2001 and the Wrexham born player
quickly established himself as a regular in the Shrews starting
line-up, making the right back birth his own. Despite his relatively
young age Moss has gone on to make 158 appearances for the Gay Meadow
club, scoring eleven times in the process.

His impressive form during his stint with Shrewsbury has also seen
International recognition come his way as he has been capped alongside
David Vaughan at Wales Under-21 level.

Six of his eleven goals have come during the current campaign,
including four in his past four matches. Moss recently took over as
captain following injuries to Darren Tinson and Martyn O'Connor and was
in superb form when Dario made the trip to the Gay Meadow to watch him
earlier this month. Captaining the side Moss scored twice in a 4-2
victory over Kidderminster Harriers.

With the paperwork on his transfer completed, Moss is available to
face Wolves in the Coca-Cola Championship on Saturday, but has missed
the Shrews past couple of games through injury and so will be battling
to be fit to start.

How exciting!

Bonkers behaviour from Delia on Monday night, as Norwich manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of a draw. Ashton seemed to be having a bit of a blinder, scoring Norwich's first with a fantastic flick over James - that'll be England's number 1/2/3/whatever he is at the moment - and setting up the second, putting some other bloke through who managed to push a bobbling effort in.

Having gone 2-0 up you'd think they'd manage to hold on but nooooo. Two goals conceded before half time, prompting Delia's outburst, which was tremendously amusing if not particularly effective as Fowler got City's third half an hour into injury time. Radcliffe on Tuesday's show has suggested she was, erm, on the cooking sherry. He also seems to've been watching the Sheff U - Arse game, which was a lot closer than it really should have been, and Naarwich probably want to have a look at that. If you go 2-0 up and chuck it away maybe you need to get yourself organised a bit better. The Blades are very much a hard-working, organised side, and as they showed this can be effective against top sides. In fact, let's have the Blades in the Premiership and Ashton transferring to them over the summer.
